I am not. Particularly when it comes to connecting with all the high tech gadgets, I am not highly connected.
Before you say, “well, that’s fairly typical for a middle-aged person,” let me say that I am computer literate and somewhat of a nerd. I build websites. I code in html and css. I’m learning php. So there’s no fear on my part, just reluctance.
I just don’t see the purpose, uh, maybe ‘need’ is a better word, to text, tweek, call, email, video chat, facebook it, my space it…whatever, every minutia of my life to people who probably could not care any less. A lot of good quality time is wasted IMHO. That’s time that could be spent with friends and family – in person; or getting much needed exercise; or studying something new. Why would I want to put up an irrelevant picture and then try to write something glib in the caption? Why would I want to send chain-email messages to all my contacts, or mention that I went to the grocery store to buy some ground turkey in 140 characters or less? J.u.s.t. W.h.y?
I’m of the mind that it takes a certain level of narcissism to be forever active in those venues. Oh, I suppose an outside observer could find those areas in which I’m self absorbed, but they will have to do so without an invite, because I will not be tweeking, texting, emailing, video chatting, or facebooking about it.
Ok…all the above is more than 140 characters…so I’m good for another few months.
